Did you know the average home wastes over 11,000 gallons of water every year simply waiting for hot water to come out of their pipes? That’s over 30 gallons per day. Think about how often you turn on the faucet and do other tasks waiting for the hot water to finally appear. All that water used to just go down the drain, but it doesn’t have to anymore.
Hot water recirculation is among the newest hot water trends around. From the company Grundfos, you can implement a Modern Comfort hot water system that prevents all that wasted water. Instead of wasting the water, it recirculates the water back to the water heater creating a continuous flow of hot water. By having a continuous flow of hot water in the hot water supply line, there is no waiting for hot water to reach you; it is instantaneous. You turn on the faucet, and there will be hot water.
This system can be implemented in either new homes or in a retrofit. In a retrofit environment, it will use the cold water supply line as the “return-line” to the water heater using a patented thermostatically controlled valve attached under the sink furthest from the water heater.
In a new construction, there will simply be a dedicated return line installed between the end of the hot water supply line and the water heater where the returned water will travel.
In both implementations, a pump is behind the whole system. Installed on the hot water heater, the pump pulls “recycled” water back to the hot water heater to be reheated and circulated through the system once more.
With the amount of hot water used in a home each day, it’s no wonder people can’t wait to get their hands on the latest in hot water management. It not only stops unnecessary waste of our water but it will also help save wasted money.
